As the premier florist in the Salisbury, MA area our team at Marianne’s knows the ins and outs of flowers. From fillers to seasonal blooms, weddings to sympathy arrangements, we have the expertise that many look for when deciding on a floral shop to entrust. While common sense tells us that flowers will brighten someone’s day, scientific evidence has backed this up. A recent study from Rutgers Behavioral Study revealed new interesting finds.
While many of us have received flowers at one point or another, did you consider how the flowers made you feel? The study by Rutgers shows flowers can positively affect moods, while also relieving stress. Whether in an arrangement or surrounded by an outdoor flower garden, the presence of flowers elevates emotions of happiness, life satisfaction, and social behaviors. In this article, we’re highlighting the research findings:
1. Flowers immediately impact positive moods.
In the study, participants were given a pen, a flower, or nothing at all. Both men and women who received the flowers always responded with a “real” smile and reported more positive moods, even after three days. The participants were engaged with more positive behaviors than those who were given a pen or nothing. Also, the recipients of flowers reported feeling less depressed and anxious and more satisfied with their lives. This experience was reported across all age groups!
2. Flowers promote intimate connections.
An unexpected benefit was a connection participants made to those outside of the study. For example, increased communication through thank you notes and phone calls were extended. Furthermore, an unexpected flower delivery opened the door for dinner invitations. Lastly, more frequent hugs and kisses were reported as well.
3. Flowers can help the elderly.
When given to senior participants, they reported an uplifted mood and a sense of being, as well as increased episodic memory.
4. Flowers are a symbol of cheerfulness and sharing.
People who displayed flowers in the main rooms of their house - such as the living room, foyer, and kitchen -reported that the room felt more welcoming. A similar study performed by Harvard noted that people who viewed flowers in the morning felt happier and more energetic throughout the day.
